Our client is one of the world’s premier privately owned real estate investment firms, operating in over 30 countries. With $93 billion of assets under management and a portfolio of 1,800+ properties, the firm possesses a solid global presence and is recognized as a leader in sustainability. For Mexico, a core market, the fund seeks a controller, a seasoned professional with ample years’ experience in accounting and finance, preferably garnered in the real estate sector. The position is based in Mexico City.
 

What the job involves

  • Lead and coordinate effective communication with finance and accounting teams, senior and middle management, and external stakeholders across the US, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica
  • Ensure timely, accurate accounting records and reports in compliance with policies and standards (GAAP, IFRS), including complex areas like debt modifications, acquisitions, and interest capitalization
  • Supervise and develop the accounting team, managing their performance, training, and internal/external relationships
  • Oversee treasury functions, including bank reconciliations, cash flow projections, and management of property, partnership, and profit center cash
  • Review and approve funding requests, reserves, and write-offs following governing agreements
  • Maintain compliance with legal documents such as loans, joint ventures, property management agreements, and leases
  • Analyze and review general ledger, monthly and quarterly reports, and accounting memos for new or unusual transactions
  • Manage complex ownership and equity structures with technical accounting expertise
  • Support budgeting and forecasting efforts and assist in preparing the annual profit center plan for the firm in Mexico
  • Administer financial and internal audits, collaborating with lease administration and management services teams
  • Review tax projections, prepare workpapers, and provide guidance to the in-country tax manager and operations team on complex issues, identifying risks and implementing mitigation strategies to safeguard assets and ensure internal control integrity
  • Evaluate and recommend new programs, technologies, and process improvements
  • Prepare and review ad hoc reports for senior management and external users, analyzing data to support informed decision-making
  • Collaborate with department leadership to address issues, manage projects, and support overall group administration

Who we are looking for

  • Solid years of professional accounting experience, ideally blending public accounting with industry exposure. (Strong preference for candidates with a background in public accounting)
  • Proven ability to fluently read, write, and speak both English and Spanish
  • Several years of prior management experience with demonstrated leadership capabilities  and team-building skills
  • Deep knowledge and practical application of Mexican GAAP, with a clear understanding of differences between Mexican GAAP and fiscal (tax) accounting
  • Experience handling foreign exchange (FX) transactions and related translation processes
  • Familiarity with commercial real estate and/or Mexican securities is preferred, as is tax-related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated skills in overseeing processes, planning resources, and meeting deadlines
  • Experience overseeing internal controls and compliance: identifying and mitigating risks, enforcing controls while maintaining positive working relationships, uncovering areas for process improvement, enhancing efficiency, leading changes and influencing stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and coordination abilities with effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Collaborative mindset, capable of exchanging ideas and working with others to reach decisions and solutions
